By now, many of you have heard the tragic news of the passing of 17-year-old Freddy Espinal, a junior at Peabody High, this past weekend. Our hearts go out to Freddy’s family and friends during this profoundly difficult time.
Though it may seem impossible to find solace amidst such sorrow, we hope that the support of our community can bring some measure of peace to those who are grieving. Freddy, while not a member of our program, was cherished throughout the community and shared meaningful friendships with many of our players. Before attending Peabody High, he brightened the halls of Welch Elementary and Higgins Middle School with his infectious smile, winning the hearts of hundreds.
In the wake of this loss, our Senior League team members quickly reached out to one another, demonstrating the deep bonds that unite us all. We encourage our Peabody Babe Ruth families to keep Freddy’s loved ones and friends in your thoughts as they navigate this painful journey.
For those who wish to support Freddy’s family financially, a GoFundMe campaign has been established to help ease their burden: https://www.gofundme.com/f/easing-the-burden-for-freddy-espinals-family?attribution_id=sl:2d0630f7-c289-4dce-a54d-cff4ffe5d049&utm_campaign=pd_ss_icons&utm_medium=customer&utm_source=copy_link
Lastly, let us remain mindful of our youth during this time. Many are feeling hurt and confused, grappling with the fragility of life. It is essential that we listen, answer their questions, and offer comfort. Life is a precious gift, and the relationships we cultivate are invaluable. Let us all strive to empathize with those whose lives have been so tragically disrupted.
With deepest sympathy,
The Peabody Babe Ruth Board of Directors
